Why use a crepe and pancake maker?

The large, non-stick cooking surface of this electric pancake maker means it is much easier to cook your crepes and pancake than with a traditional frying pan. Using the ladle provided you simply add 2 scoops of batter (depending on the recipe) and then use the spreader to distribute the batter so it cooks evenly. There’s no need to tip the pan through all angles to try can get the cooking surface covered. Furthermore, the large cooking space means you can create even pancakes and crepes without the batter pooling at the edges of the pan causing edges of raw mix whilst the middle has already cooked. The only difficult part of cooking with this pancake maker machine is deciding what fillings and toppings you should add.

How easy is it to make pancakes?

It’s really simple. Mix up your batter and let it stand for around 30 mins in the fridge, this step can make a real difference to how well your pancakes turn out.

Switch the pancake cooker on to a high heat and brush over about half a teaspoon of oil. You only need a small amount of oil, too much and your pancakes will start to bubble and split. Once the machine has heated up turn the temperature down to medium.

Spread your batter on the cooking surface and allow it to cook for around a minute. Next, use the spatula included to gently lift the edges of the pancake, if it is cooked on that side it will lift away easily. Use the spatula to flip it over and cook the other side. This usually cooks quicker than the first so keep an eye on proceedings and lift the pancake off once it is ready. You don’t need to add more oil before making pancakes, each application will usually be sufficient for 6 or more.

What else can this pancake cooker make?

Aside from the classic British pancake and the European crepe, you can use your electric crepe maker to cook blini, Russia’s version of the Blini, Indian Dosa or Chinese Bing. You can choose to make sweet or savoury dishes, keto pancakes, gluten free versions and even vegan pancakes if you have the correct ingredients.

How hot does this crepe maker get?

The adjustable temperature dial lets you turn the heat up to 250 degrees centigrade although most recipes are best made using a medium temperature. There’s a power on indicator light and a ready light so it’s easy to see when your pancake maker has reached to desired temperature. You can even turn the heat down to the lowest setting to keep your pancakes warm whilst you eat the first ones that you made.

Is it easy to clean?

Yes, the 33cm diameter cast aluminium hot plate has a non-stick PTFE coating so you only need to add a tiny amount of oil. ONce you’ve finished cooking wait for the pancake maker to cool down a little then wipe the surface with a warm, damp soft cloth to remove any remaining batter.

What are your top cooking tips for crepes and pancakes?

Don’t use too much oil! The non-stick surface means you only need to add a tiny little bit, and this is often sufficient to cook a whole batch of batter.

Use the ladle provided: The recipes that come with your machine refer to ‘ladles full’ of batter to add to the pancake cooker each time. However, this ladle has a much smaller capacity that your standard kitchen ladle that you may use to serve soup or stews. The cooking surface is large so you don’t need to spread the batter to the edge. By ensuring there is space around your crepe or pancake it’s easier to lift and flip it, plus, you don’t spill your batter all over your work surfaces.

You only need a gentle touch with the tools: It’s quite surprising how little pressure you need to use with the batter spreader. Too much and you’ll push through the batter creating holes or even causing your wooden spreader to get stuck in the cooking batter. The same is true for the spatula. Use it to gently lift the edges as too much pressure will tear to pancake.

Product FAQs
Can It Make Chapatis?

Yes, if you turn it to a high heat and ensure the surface is oiled. This is a recipe you could try*;

In a large bowl stir together 140g wholemeal flour and 140g plain flour. Using a wooden spoon stir in 2 tbsp olive oil. Pour in up to 180ml of hot water to make a soft, elastic dough that isn’t sticky. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-10 mins (or in an Andrew James stand mixer) then split into 10 individual balls. Roll each onle out until they are very thin, cook on the pancake maker until the underside has brown spots then flip and cook the other side.

*Adapted from BBC Good Food.

Does It Switch Off Automatically?

No. There’s no timer on the machine so you will have to turn it off when you have finished cooking. Always unplug it from the wall before cleaning to be safe.

Can I Make a Fried Breakfast on This?

Yes, it would be able to cook mushrooms, tomatoes, eggs (we recommend using a cooking ring to keep them contained), pretty much anything you’d normally cook in a conventional frying pan. The only difference is this pan has no lip and it’s plugged in rather than being heated on a stove.

What is the Size of the Diameter?

13 inches/33cm.

What is the Coating?

A non-stick PTFE coating.

How Do I Clean My Crepe Maker?

Once you have finished cooking, wait for the pancake maker to cool down a little and then wipe the surface with a warm, damp soft cloth to remove any remaining batter.
