Why Use A Coffee Grinder?
Coffee grinders make it easy to turn your coffee beans into freshly ground coffee for use in coffee machines and percolators etc. This particular model is a bladed grinder, also known as a coffee mill, not a burr coffee machine. This means it uses two flat, sharp blades that spin around very fast to slice and grind the contents of the grinding chamber. This great little machine is ideal for as an espresso coffee grinder, allowing you to enjoy all the flavours and aromas that a fresh grind can bring.
How Do You Use An Electric Coffee Grinder?
Put your coffee beans into the top of the machine and replace the transparent lid, ensuring it is secure. To start grinding simply press the button on top of the lid, then press it again to stop.
What Else Can You Use Coffee Grinders for?
You can use this coffee grinder for spices as well as a variety of other tasks. There are many other ingredients you can use your coffee grinder to process:
The Andrew James Coffee Grinder can also be used to grind softer nuts such as whole almonds, brazil nuts, and cashews, however it is recommended to prepare in a pestle and mortar first in order to achieve a fully ground finish and the best results.
How Do You Clean A Coffee Grinder?
Firstly, turn off your coffee grinder and unplug it from the socket. Remove the lid and wash with warm soapy water then rinse and allow to dry. When you’re cleaning the grinding chamber remember to take care around those sharp blades. Remove as much of the dust as possible with a dry cloth or small, soft bristled brush, you can then wipe the inside with a soft, damp cloth and allow to dry completely before replacing the lid.

It is best to clean your grinder between every use. This will ensure that dust and debris doesn't build up, which could be detrimental to the taste of your beans and may reduce the life of the machine. You should definitely give the grinder a clean when you switch between coffee, spices, bread, etc, to prevent the flavours and aromas from the previous grind affecting the results.
Because this is a bladed coffee grinder it doesn’t need calibrating - that is something that happens with burr coffee grinders.
Bladed coffee grinders chop and slice the beans using sharp blades that spin extremely fast. This means there will always be some inconsistencies in the results, and this can be affected by things such as the original size of bean and the amount you put in to the grinder. Our top tips for achieving an even grind include using short, sharp bursts, shaking the machine after each one, and only grinding what you need.

Coffee Grinder Top Tips:
Because bladed coffee mills slice and chop the beans as opposed to crushing them, there are some top tips to make sure you get the best from your coffee grinder machine.
Firstly, grind your coffee as close to brewing as you can. The 70g capacity of this grinder makes enough for up to 10 cups of coffee, so if you are not catering for a crowd, only grind as much as you need. This means you benefit from the full flavour of your coffee - something that dissipates over time the longer the delay between grinding and brewing.
Use short bursts and shake your machine between grinds. The maximum run time for this electric coffee grinder is 30 seconds, but you don’t have to do that all in one go. Press the button on the top of the machine and hold for a second or two then release, wait for the blades to stop spinning, then give it all a little shake. This will help you achieve a more consistent blend rather than a mix of fine and coarse granules.
Finally, don’t over-grind. The friction of the blades will generate heat which, when combined with the heat of the motor, can actually burn your coffee beans leaving them bitter and tasteless. In addition, overheating the motor by running it for too long can cause your grinder to fail so make sure you allow a 3-minute cool-down period after each 30 seconds of grinding.
